Though “The Great White North” is our next door neighbor, it always seems to rank low on our list of vacation spots. Don’t let the cold winters deter you — we’ve discovered Canada has plenty to brag about. Here are our top reasons you should grab your passport for a trip across the border.

The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). Held every September, this fest is home to the best and the brightest in film. Cinephiles can score tickets to Hollywood premieres as well as international flicks, shorts and special events. While star watchers can catch a glimpse of their favorite celebrities on the red carpet, at local restaurants or reveling at festival after parties.

Montreal Jazz Festival. This summer tradition is about more than just jazz. Past festivals featured acts like Bob Dylan, Rufus Wainwright, Belle and Sebastian and Cyndi Lauper. In between ticketed shows you can catch the next wave of must-see talent for free (aka street performers) while indulging in a little poutine.

Montreal en Lumiere. Foodies head north in February when 400 renowned chefs and wine purveyors transform the Quartier des Spectacales into a gourmond’s dream. Make sure you’re there for the closer, Nuit Blanche, the city’s all night party featuring hundreds of free activities like concerts, dancing, performance art and film screenings.

Vancouver International Wine Festival. On the opposite coast, Vancouver offers oenophiles the chance to sample wines from around the world, attend seminars and graze on some of the best foods the city has to offer. Those in the know nab tickets to the fest’s Bacchanalia Gala where you can bid on rare vintages donated by private collectors.
