On a cold snowy day, there is nothing better than a mug of warm, rich hot chocolate. The modern drink has been enjoyed since the 16th century, when Spanish explorers brought chocolate from the New World to Spain. The Native Americans they encountered made a spicy version, but the Spanish added sugar to their chocolaty drink.

Today, you’ll find a slew of luxurious flavors, from extra-creamy and triple caramel to an adult-approved spiked hot chocolate. Start with an ultra rich recipe and keep warm this winter with these tasty variations.

Five-Spice Hot Chocolate. Add a kick of spice to your mug with a heaping spoonful of five-spice powder, a Chinese blend of star anise, fennel seed, cassia, Szechuan peppercorns, and clove. This recipe goes one step further with a splash of orange-flavored rum, creating a wonderfully spicy citrus sip.

Raspberry Hot Chocolate. Fruit pairs wonderfully with chocolate and will add a nice brightness to your mug. Try adding a spoonful of raspberry liquor, raspberry jam, or raspberry syrup. You can also try other fruit flavors, or for a citrusy infusion, simply add orange zest to the warm cream.

Caramel-Swirl Hot Chocolate. Rich enough to be dessert, this hot chocolate is topped with copious amounts of whipped cream and silky caramel sauce.
